Second Saturday Science Talk: Ngā Tohunga Whakatere

Join us at Battle Point Observatory Saturday, May 9 at 7:00 pm for our monthly Second Saturday Science Talk! Star Party to follow if skies are clear.

In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, experience an immersive presentation of the family friendly short film, "Ngā Tohunga Whakatere - The Navigators", followed by a talk on Traditional Voyaging and Navigation by BPAA President Frank Petrie.

Ngā Tohunga Whakatere - The Navigators: Fly through space, follow the stars, traverse the largest ocean on Earth with Moko, and her ancestors! 

Celebrate both Pasifika and European navigation and the science used to sail in Aotearoa. The cultural aspect of telling the story was at the heart of the movie project. The production is embedded in tikanga Māori and carefully crafted with cultural and navigational expertise from Pacific Master Navigator and advisors. In his talk, Frank will provide more detail about how Pacific navigators used the stars and other clues to find their way across vast expanses of ocean.

All experience levels are welcome. After the talk, if skies are clear stay for a Star Party!
