A Women in STEM Book Club

Three extraordinary women. Three remarkable lives. Three conversations about curiosity, discovery and changing what's possible.

Join Battle Point Observatory for a three-part fall book club exploring Marie Curie, Vera Rubin and Mae Jemison through books about their lives, discoveries and journeys in science.

The series is facilitated by Erin Howard, a research scientist whose own work connects directly to astronomy and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.

Meet with us on Zoom for one session or all three:

    August 25 | Marie Curie
    Madame Curie by Eve Curie

    September 22 | Vera Rubin
Vera Rubin: A Life by Jacqueline and Simon Mitton
    Foreword by Jocelyn Bell Burnell

    October 27 | Mae Jemison
Find Where the Wind Goes: Moments From My Life by Mae Jemison

    6:00–7:00 PM | Zoom

Register once and join any or all three conversations.

    Reading with a young scientist?

Each month's selection also has an optional Kiddo Companion Book so families can share these extraordinary women's stories with the next generation:

The Story of Marie Curie — Susan B. Katz
The Stuff Between the Stars: How Vera Rubin Discovered Most of the Universe — Sandra Nickel
Mae Jemison: A Kid's Book About Reaching Your Dreams — Mary Nhin

Curious minds welcome. Come discover the women who changed how we see our world—and our universe.

Join us at Battle Point Observatory Saturday, September 12 at 7:00 pm for our monthly Second Saturday Science Talk! Star Party to follow if skies are clear.

    "The Magic of Science"

    Guest speaker: Marshall Bonow

Join us for an engaging and fun presentation about “The Magic of Science”, with guest speaker Marshall Bonow! With a combination of science talk plus magic show, Marshall shares fascinating scientific concepts and a magical scenario to demonstrate the power of scientific phenomenon. All ages welcome, recommended for ages 13+.

About Marshall: A senior at Hyla High School and volunteer with BPAA, Marshall is deeply interested in investigating aspects of science that school doesn’t teach, and sharing that science with new audiences in engaging ways.

After the talk, stay for a planetarium show, and if skies are clear we'll have a Star Party!
